The Arthur Murray Franchised Dance Studio at Chatham has found that students learn most quickly and effectively on a scholastic basis. In the introductory program you will be taught the basic patterns of the most popular dances today. Your instructor will explain how the Medal Standards are taught and will plan a personalized program to fulfill your specific needs and desires.

Keeping in mind the time constraints faced in today’s fast paced world, Arthur Murrays offers convenient times and locations to make dance more accessible to our dance enthusiasts. The history of Arthur Murray Dance Studios began in 1912, when a young man named Arthur Murray-one of 5 children born in New York City to Austrian immigrants-began teaching ballroom dancing at night while working as a draftsman by day. He soon broadened his reach with innovative dance courses that were available by mail and on the radio.

After years of experience, Mr. Murray developed a foolproof method to teach anyone how to dance, and in 1925 he founded a nationwide franchise of studios to share that method with the country.

On April 24, 1925, Mr. Murray married his famous dance partner, Kathryn, whom he met while broadcasting a dance lesson at a radio station in New Jersey. As his business continued to expand, Mr. Murray and Kathryn became the first to realize the growing popularity of Latin dances during the 1950's, and held many conventions in Cuba to give Arthur Murray teachers first-hand knowledge of the new Latin styles.

In 1950, the Murrays began to televise a half-hour series on ABC called the "Arthur Murray Dance Party," in which Kathryn would host a variety of prominent guests-from sports stars to actors and musicians-and teach them a particular dance. This highly popular show ran for twelve years on national television.

When Arthur and Kathryn Murray retired in 1964, a group of franchisees purchased the company and brought a new spirit and leadership to it. Today, Arthur Murray Dance Studios continues to be known around the world for its fresh, modern dances and uniquely effective techniques, with studios throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe, the Middle-East, Japan, Africa and Australia.
